To fully enjoy the X-Wing experience, we highly recommend the use of a joystick. We have provided default joystick sets for several popular joysticks which will automatically assign predetermined keyboard functions to certain joystick buttons. If you choose to use a joystick while playing X-Wing, you have a wide range of choices. The joysticks supported by the game are:

• CH Products Jetstick
• Thrustmaster Mark I Flight Control System
• Advanced Gravis Firebird
• Advanced Gravis MouseStick II
• MicroQue QueStick
• MacALLY Joystick
• MacFly Joystick
In addition to default joystick settings, we have included the latest version of CH Products' driver software (version 1.2.2). If you own a CH Products' joystick, the default settings will work with either this version or older versions of the joystick software.
For any joystick not listed here, check the instructions that came with the joystick. To set your joystick for play in X-Wing, configure your joystick using the software that came with it, so that centering the joystick centers the cursor on the screen, and the joystick is able to move the cursor over the full range of the screen (this is often referred to as “Absolute Mode”). You can then configure the remaining hats/switches/buttons to simulate standard keypresses.
Note: Because of certain limitations of the game, X-Wing CD does not support joysticks or gamepads which rely upon using the keyboard for directional movement.
CH Flightstick Pro
We have included a default set in the Controller Settings folder in your X-Wing CD-Rom. To import the default settings, go to your Flightstick Pro software in your control panel and select Im-/Export button. Press Open... and open the file “X-Wing” from the Controller Settings folder on the X-Wing CD. Select the X-Wing setting in the right side window and press <<<Import<<<. Press Done when you have completed this. You may also make your own setting by using your Flightstick Pro software located in your control panel. Follow the instructions included with your Flightstick. (Note: Make sure that the setting you create is set to "absolute" mode.) In your Flightstick Pro software, please make sure that the "current setting:" is X-Wing (or whatever name you have for your joystick set), the "automatic load" box is checked and the application switch is on.
CH Jetstick
Go to your Jetstick software in your control panel and select Im-/Export button. Press Open... and open the file “Jetstick” from the Controller Settings folder on the X-Wing CD-ROM. Select the X-Wing setting in the right side window and press <<<Import<<<. Press Done when you have completed this. (Note: Make sure that the setting you create is set to "absolute" mode.) In your Flightstick Pro software, please make sure that the "current setting:" is X-Wing (or whatever name you have for your joystick set), the "automatic load" box is checked and the application switch is on.
Thrustmaster Mark I FCS
Copy the strokes set “X-Wing” from the Thrustmaster folder, located in the Controller Settings folder on the X-Wing CD-ROM into your ThrustMaster Strokes Sets folder (located in the Preferences folder of your system folder). Now go to your Thrustmaster Strokes software located in your "Thrustmaster stuff" folder usually located on your harddrive. Click on "Application name menu" button located on the upper left and select X-Wing from the pull down menu. Make sure that "Direct stick" is selected under "Stick Treatment". Close the Thrustmaster Strokes software and double check that the Thrustmaster Monitor is in your system's startup folder and that the Thrustmaster driver has been checked on in your Extensions. Note: The Thrustmaster FCS will only be active during flight sequences. Use your mouse for other areas of the game.
Advanced Gravis Firebird
Drag the X-Wing set from the Firebird folder in Controller settings in your X-Wing CD into the Firdbird Set folder (usually located in your System folder). Once you've done this, go to your Firebird software and click Open from the menu bar. Choose the X-Wing set and click OK. The picture of the Firebird should now have "X-Wing" as the title. Finally, click on Configure Firebird from the menu. To double-check that your set has been properly loaded, click on Get driver info under utilities. "Set loaded" should say "X-Wing set". Note: the controller set included in your X-Wing CD only has the buttons on the stick mapped for keyboard functions. The throttle has also been set up for use with X-Wing to control starfighter speeds.
Advanced Gravis MouseStick II
Copy the included X-Wing set file from the MouseStick folder in the Controller Settings folder on the X-Wing CD-ROM into the MouseStick sets folder in your system folder. Open the MouseStick II control panel, select the X-Wing set, and drag the selection to the image of the joystick you are using. Make sure that the "application aware" box is checked.
MicroQue QueStick
Open the QueStick software under the system's control panel. Click on the configure button, select the Import button, choose Desktop, the folder “QueStick” from the Controller Settings folder on the X-Wing CD-ROM, double-click on the X-Wing set and click on done. Then select add under the application side of the Questick software panel, go to your X-Wing install folder, select X-Wing and press done. Now highlight X-Wing on the app side, highlight the X-Wing set on the sets side and select attach.
The “primary” button is the finger trigger with the AUTO switch set to the On (forward) or Off (down) position. Note: Due to certain limitations of the Questick software, the thumb button has been assigned the "T" key (when the AUTO switch is ON) which cycles through all targets. In order to target and/or spin your ship on its axis, you will have to use the CTRL key on the keyboard. The thumb button has been assigned the "."(period) key when the AUTO switch is off.
MacALLY Joystick
Open the MacALLY Joy App. Select Import from the File menu and choose the X-Wing setting in the “MacALLY” folder from the Controller Settings on the X-Wing CD-ROM and click open. Then select the X-Wing setting.
MacFly Joystick
Open the MacFLY control panel located in your system's control panel and select load. In the load box, go to Desktop, X-Wing CD, Controller settings folder, the Macfly folder, click on the X-Wing setting and open. Make sure "absolute" is selected under the heading Motion:.
Because proper configuration for most of these joysticks requires that they take over the mouse pointer, you may find that moving the mouse during gameplay can affect your movement. Unfortunately, the only real solution to the problem is to just be careful not to move the mouse while you’re playing. If you find that you have difficulty moving your mouse outside of flight sequences, try using the joystick to move the pointer instead.
